In plain terms, imagine Russia and Ukraine as brothers of the same father (the Soviet Union). Both of them went to start a family with land inheritance from their father (the Soviet Union). Russia believes they are still family. Ukraine (or parts of Ukraine) doesn't. Ukraine wants to be friends with a strange man he met somewhere (NATO, majorly USA). This man happens to be their father's enemy in his lifetime. Russia talks to Ukraine not to do that. He explains that it would be a desecration to their father's memory and that the man who is acting friendly just wants to take their father's properties (land).
